From its inception in 1968, the Black American Studies program has been consistent, persistent and transformative. Year after year, the opportunities have been there for students to learn about the hidden aspects of American history and culture; to "fill in the blanks" of what we think we know; and to participate in a model of how to do interdisciplinary studies. The faculty and staff of the BAS program have learned how to "make a way out of no way," never losing sight of the dream of offering a major in Black American (or Africana) Studies, and, eventually, a graduate certificate. With some members of the core faculty finally achieving tenure in the program, and with the collaboration of other faculty from everywhere on campus, we are convinced that "the change is going to come . . . soon and very soon." Ultimately the greatest mark of our success is in the accomplishment of our students, some of whom have received sufficient training in our program to complete doctoral studies at prestigious universities; and all of whom are better able to "define the terms by which they live."
